Published August 07, 2024

I used Mint Mobile as my cell phone provider for the last few years. I recently left them and moved my number to Visible by Verizon. This blog post will show you the steps to port out your number from Mint Mobile.

What is Mint Mobile?

Mint Mobile is an MVNO, or mobile virtual network operator that offers prepaid cell phone services. Mint Mobile uses T-Mobile's network. They were recently acquired by T-Mobile.

Why Did I Move Out of Mint Mobile?

I used Mint Mobile for the last few years. I was on their 5 GB $15/month and paid a year in advance. The service was initially great and then got erratic the last few months. There were zero bars in certain areas, including inside shopping malls and rural parts of Virginia.

I Tried Out Visible by Verizon

I decided to shop around for alternatives. Visible by Verizon seemed a good fit. For $25/month, they offer unlimited Internet, and of course, certain conditions apply.

Visible is an MVNO that offers prepaid services, and is owned by Verizon. Since I have used Verizon in the past and had a good experience with Verizon, I decided to try them out. I signed up for Visible's 2-week trial. I downloaded their eSIM on my iPhone SE. After a week, I was happy and ported my number to Visible. As soon as my phone number was ported out, Visible had Mint Mobile close my account with them.

I was using Mint Mobile's physical SIM card and Visible's eSIM in my iPhone SE. Most of the time, Visible had a better signal. In a few places, Mint Mobile was better.

What You Need Before Moving Out of Mint Mobile

Before you move out of Mint Mobile or your current mobile phone provider, you need these things.

  • Name of New Phone Provider: In my case, it was Visible.
  • Transfer Eligibility: This is possible only if you do not have outstanding dues or for any other restriction in your contract.
  • Your Mint Mobile Account Number and Transfer PIN

Does It Cost Anything to Get the Account Number and Transfer PIN?

Mint Mobile does not charge anything to port out the number. Other telecom and MVNO companies may charge you to port out or port in, and include it as a setup fee. If you have an outstanding bill, you may be sent a final bill.

How to Get Mint Mobile Acount Number and Transfer PIN

Your Mint Mobile account number is not found anywhere in your profile. This is a unique number and not the same as your phone number. You need to ask for it on chat on their website.

Login to your Mint Mobile account and get on their chat. You will be greeted by their Fox Bot.

You will be prompted to choose a topic. Enter Account Number.

In the next message, you will be asked what you are looking for. Enter To Port Out.

You will be placed in a queue to wait for the next available human agent.

After you are connected, ask them for your Account Number. The customer service human agent will ask you to verify your identity by confirming your name, phone number and address, along with zip code.

The human agent will then make one last verification by sending you a one-time verification code to your phone as a text message / SMS.

Mint here. We're just checking to make sure it's you. Here's your one-time verification code 123456.

Once you provide the verification code, the agent may ask you more questions.

They will then give you your Mint Mobile account number and transfer PIN.

After You Get Your Account Number and Transfer PIN, What Next?

Now, login to the new provider's website or app. In my case, I downloaded and logged into the Visible app, and began the porting process.

The Visible app prompted me to enter my Mint Mobile account number and transfer PIN. Once I entered them, it took a few minutes and my phone number got ported to Visible. It was very fast.

I then shut down my iPhone, took out the Mint Mobile SIM card and started my phone. After the clean start, Visible was the only SIM / eSIM in my phone.

Visible 2-Week Trial and My Referral Code

If you wish to try Visible for free for 2 weeks while still using your current provider, you can download the trial eSIM of Visible. You will be given a new number. You can test it and compare the signal bars with your existing provider.

If you decide to sign up for Visible using my referral code, you and I will both get $20 off on our next bill

FCC Webpage About Porting Numbers

For technical reasons, if you want to read the FCC's webpage about porting your number, here it is.

The FCC has more information about porting your number to a different provider.

Conclusion

In my opinion, Visible is better than Mint Mobile. Mint Mobile has great customer service and had decent coverage, but once I was out of the city, the signal was bad. Visible runs on the Verizon network and that has statistically the best coverage, and Mint's $15/month plus taxes for 5GB lost out to Visible's $25/month unlimited.

Your mileage may vary.
