Garbage Truck Damaged Our Trash Bin

Published August 26, 2025

Sometime back, our trash can was damaged by the arms of the garbage truck. We captured it on video.

Our trash company has garbage trucks with mechanical hydraulic arms to pick up the trash bins and empty them into the back of the truck. I believe they also are used to compact the waste.

Garbage truck mechanical hydraulic arms can be unpredictable sometimes

Unfortunately, these arms can go haywire sometimes. They can damage nearby cars or injure pedestrians. Or just decide to apply extra pressure, as it happened to our trash bin.

When I put the trash and recycle bins out for pickup, I try to put them as far as possible as I can from the car nearest to it.

On that day, after trash pickup, I noticed our relatively new trash bin damaged.

At first, I wondered if someone vandalized it. Then, after reviewing our multiple cameras pointing towards the trash can area, I caught the garbage truck doing the dirty work.

So, this is how it happened. I'm glad the trash bin was far away from the back of the car.

The waste management company sent a free replacement

I told the waste management company about their truck damaging our trash bin. I also mentioned the video our security camera caught. The company sent a [badly maintained] replacement trash bin as a free replacement, and picked up the damaged one a couple of weeks later.

Since I may be a little germaphobic, I had to clean the replacement bin with bleach and water multiple times before using it.

Has it happened before?

Thinking about it, in the past, in our previous homes, I remember finding some of our previous trash bins broken or badly scratched on the side, sometimes with an apparently forceful hit. I assumed it was the wind, or maybe a car that hit it.

Thanks to our Wyze security cameras, I was able to find the reason and get a resolution for it soon.

PS: I'm not affiliated with Wyze in any way other than being a relativelly happy customer.

Who is legally responsible for trash bins damanged like this?

Is it the driver? I've seen a few garbage truck drivers being careless and irresponsible when they are on their route. When they have access to machinery that can cause damage to vehicles and injury to people, they should be far more careful.

Is the waste management company responsible? Or the company that handles the garbage truck maintenance?

Most waste management companies charge for trash and recycle bins, and their replacments, if damaged. It is good to keep everything under surveillance, in case of incidents like this.

Even worse, if the gargage truck gets too close to your car and scratches or dents it, you have recorded proof of that damage that will hold in court, if required.

Conclusion

Did you ever discover that your trash bin was broken? Did you pay for a replacement? Does your company provide trash bins or do you buy them from a hardware store? Let me know of your experiences. Thanks for reading.
