After 4 years, the battery of our Volkswagen Jetta key fob gave out. This blog post shows how we replaced it with a new battery. This works for all VW Jetta 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024.
How to change the battery of your Volkswagen Jetta
What Battery Does the Volkswagen Jetta Key FOB Use?
The Volkswagen Jetta key FOB uses CR 2025 5V coin cell. I personally prefer Panasonic, Energizer or Duracell, in that order.
You can buy it from CVS, Walmart, Target, Batteries Plus or any general store.
What you need
You will need these:
- New coin battery CR 2025
- Regular flat screwdriver
- Very small flat screwdriver
Purchase CR 2025 Coin Battery
I bought a set of CR 2025 Duracell coin batteries from CVS. Make sure that the expiry date is as far away as possible.
Get a Regular Flat Screwdriver and a Thin Screwdriver. Pry The Key FOB Open
Get a regular flat screwdriver. If you don't have one, buy it from Put the key down on a flat surface.
Then, gently pry it upwards as seen in this photo. You can twist the screwdriver in the counter-clockwise direction. The top cover of the key should pop open.
Open key fob using screwdriver
Remove the Old CR 2025 Coin Battery
Get a small flat screwdriver as well. This will be used to pop out the CR 2025 coin battery from inside the key FOB.
Remove the old CR 2025 battery
Put In the New CR 2025 Coin Battery
In the battery slot, put in the new CR 2025 coin battery. This should fit in place. Once it is done, put back the cover of the key FOB.
Test Your Key Fob With the New CR 2025 Battery
After you have put back the cover of the key FOB, test your key FOB by unlocking and locking your car door.
Conclusion
Changing your VW Jetta key fob battery should be a straightforward process with the right coin battery and two screwdrivers.
